Today From Psalms
A Great Question
Psalm 119:9 sets for one of the greatest question man will ask. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?”
The phrase “young man” is not exclusively just a young male but can refer to either a young man or young lady. It spans the age from infancy to adolescence and adulthood. The application and use of this verse to any person, especially the young, is definitely justified.
How can a young person make future course of his of life pure and upright? The language does not necessarily imply that there had been any previous impurity or vice that needs forgiven. It has particular reference to the future. How can he make the future pure and clean? How can he avoid becoming defiled? The inquiry is, how he might conduct himself; what principles he could adopt; under what influence he could bring himself so that his future course would be honest, honorable, upright.
How does the young person avoid the pitfalls of sin and corruption? How do any of us avoid the filth of the world? The answer is found in the last part of Psalm 119:9; By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
All through life we walk in a world that is filthy and full of perils, traps, and temptations. The Word enables us to pick our path safely and avoid the dirt and the snares and the pitfalls that may be put in our way.
Alexander Maclaren expresses it aptly: “Study God’s law…. And study thyself in its light; so shall youthful impulses be bridled, and the life’s path kept pure.”
