Today From Psalms

God That Judgeth

Looking upon man without God can be depressing. It is clear that generation after generation man is the same. We are sinners against God.

We ask: “Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?” (Psalm 58:1)

Is there anyone who speaks rightly and passes judgment in an upright manner? The answer is found in Psalm 58:2-3. “Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth. The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.”

This entire psalm gives us a portrait of man without God. If this were the entire picture, there would be little or no hope. But the last phrase of this chapter reminds us of the foundation of hope. “Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.” (Verse 11)

It is a comfort for us to know that God knows. If we have been the victim of man’s wickedness, God knows it.

It is a comfort to know that God will exact vengeance. But the vengeance of the Lord will be exacted without error and with impartiality.

Is my faith in God solid enough to leave judging and vengeance seeking in His hand and His time?   The New Testament amplifies this principle further. “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Romans 12:17-19

Yes, there is wickedness in the world but there is a God greater. So, I will trust in the Lord.
