Today From Psalms
Remember His Favor
It is truly a joy that is indescribable when we know how favorable God has been to us. Psalm 85 opens with this thought. “Lord, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah. Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.”
Israel had experienced captivity because they had turned away from the true worship of God. To use a more familiar term, they had backslid. Revival was needed in the nation of Israel. One key to revival is a recognition of God’s working in our lives. God had forgiven them, covered their sin, and turned away His wrath. As I meditate on this I am made aware of how quickly we forget what God has done for us. Ezekiel referred to this in Ezekiel 16; “thou has not remembered.” From time to time we need to pause and remember where we were when God saved us and where we would be today had He not done so. We that are saved can truly say: “Lord, thou hast been favourable” to us.
This daily reminder of God’s favor helps us stay close to Him. It helps us live without backsliding. It helps us live in a state of revival.
A second key to revival is found in verse 6. “Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?” The more we know and appreciate God’s favor and His forgiveness, the more we will desire revival.
It is always profitable to begin the day remembering God’s favor to us. Pause for a moment and remember, then thank God for His goodness.
