Most people imagine themselves to be someone they are not. We call this an alternative ego (alternative personality). We like to dream of ourselves being someone beyond reality. Most of the time, it is a harmless imagination and usually passes with time. In a similar way people think God to be someone of their own imagination. Some say: “God is who I think He is.” One person said; “God is a character in a story you tell yourself. You can tell yourself the story any way you like, and you can make God do and say and think whatever you want within the story. But it’s a story, and God is a character in the story, and He cannot do anything outside of that story. The limits of storytelling are the limits of what God can do.”
Jeremiah 9:23-24 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
A famous British judge, known for his strong belief in God, sometimes encountered people who said they didn’t believe in God. He always asked them to describe the god they didn’t believe in. After listening to their reply, he would tell them that he did not believe in the god they had just described either.
What do you believe about God? It does make a difference.
