Ye Are The Light

Ephesian 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.  The truth contained here is true of every person who has come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Before we came to know Christ, we were in the darkness of sin. But now we are “light in the Lord.” The contrast that is set forth here is not minor but dramatic. As “children of light” we are to walk as such. Jesus makes clear what this means in Matthew 5:14-16Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Whenever we enter a room that is dark, we turn on a light and immediately the darkness is dispelled. The greater the light the less the darkness. Can we deny that light always removes the darkness? Can light and darkness equally exist in the same sphere? The answer to both questions is no. It is also true that darkness is simply the absence of light and the light always overpowers the darkness. Where light is truly shining brilliantly, darkness does not exist. So, if we are the light of the world, why is there so much darkness all around us? For too long we have not allowed our light to shine and the darkness has prevailed and become more dominant than the light. Now we see the darkness as so overwhelming that we have become timid. We desperately need to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God which will give us the courage to overcome our timidity. No matter where we go in our society, if the light is greater than the darkness, light will prevail. The question we must ask is: “Are we willing to continue to allow the darkness to prevail, or will we be the light Jesus said we are to be?” Do not be afraid to speak the truth. Do not fear to identify yourself as a believer in Jesus Christ. Do not sanction wrong by silence.

Ye are the light of the world.
