The Lord provides us various ways for us to beat our temptations and to avoid falling into sin. In Matthew 26:41, Christ told His disciples: Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Watching and praying are two fantastic ways to avoid falling to our temptations.
I would like you to consider the watching part of that. This watching is an alertness to what is going around us and in us at all times. Just as a guard would stand alert in the watchtower of a castle keeping a look out for an enemy attack, we need to be watching out for things that are not of God. This can include things that are in our hearts and minds. It can include material things that we have weaknesses to. As soon as we see a sign of anything that is not of God, we need to take immediate action to eliminate it, avoid it, whatever it takes to prevent it from taking us into sin or (even worse) to where it grows and takes us deeper into sin.
Now let’s look at this watching aspect from another angle. In Genesis 3:6, it says: And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Eve was looking at the fruit on the tree. It was pleasant looking to her. So as she continued to look at it and admire it, a desire for it developed in her. She got to the point where she was no longer satisfied with just looking, she needed to taste it as well. As she continued to look at it, the desire grew, the temptation grew and eventually we find her and Adam eating the fruit. This was the result of continuing to watch it.
Whatever weakness you have that pulls you to it, you need to do all possible to keep it out of sight. If when you see it, you desire it more…then you need to stop seeing it! If you can, completely remove it from your home, your phone, your life; wherever it is that you see it. It is not worth it because once you take a bite to taste it (so to speak), like chips and salsa…you won’t be satisfied with just one bite.
