Should we be concerned with doing good works?
As fundamental Baptists, we preach continually about “works”. We try to make it crystal clear that there is nothing that a person can do (our works) that can earn them an entrance into heaven. We repeatedly preach that it is by faith alone without works as it says in Romans 3:28 – “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
We preach it so much that it could almost come across as preaching against good works which is not our intention at all. But, if we can’t be saved by our works, if being a good person does not earn us favor with God, then why bother with good works?
According to God, even though our works don’t save us, He still wants them to be a part of our daily lives. Titus 3:8 says: “This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.”
God tells us that He wants us to “be careful that we maintain good works”. Careful to maintain refers to making sure that we are doing it on a continual basis; that we are consistently occupied with doing good works. Why? As it says here: “These things are good and profitable unto men.” Simply put, we do good things—because they are good for others.
So I say, get out there and carry another’s burden, show them the love of God, do unto them as you would have them do unto you! Do good because it is good!
